How I Score Reviews

So many review sites have scores that functionally range from 5 to 10. That’s not the point of the system (there’s 10 numbers for a reason). Of course, my results will be positively skewed, as I’m mainly going to review games that I like. Here’s the system, so you can understand why I score things the way I do. One other thing that I do is change scores: if I find something better than a 10/10 in the same genre, I will reduce the score.

10/10 It’s not perfect, but it’s as close to perfect as it could be. Some reviewers refrain from using this, as nothing is perfect, but I use 10/10 as a sort of gold standard, as in: “this game is the best thing in its genre that I have ever played.” Buy it right now. Seriously. Do it.

9/10 One of the best in its genre, but not quite at the top. This is where games go if I take away their 10/10, or if it would be 10/10, if this one better game didn’t exist.

8/10 Easily worth a play if you own the system, but no need to go out the way for it. This game is brilliant, but it shouldn’t really factor into any decisions about buying a new system like the top scorers should.

7/10 Plenty to enjoy, but there are still noticeable flaws that make it difficult to enjoy if you aren’t a fan of the genre. There are problems and conventions that make it difficult, but not that hard to enjoy unless you’re a fan of the genre. Regardless, it’s worth taking a look at.

6/10 There’s a lot here to enjoy, but only if you’re a fan of the genre. The problems and conventions that make it very hard to enjoy, unless you’re a fan of the genre.

5/10 There are some things to enjoy, but only if you’re a fan of the series. The problems and conventions that make it very hard to enjoy, unless you’re a fan of the series. This result takes up the majority of the games that come out, but not the majority of the games that I review.

4/10 You need to be a real diehard for the series to enjoy this. The problems and conventions that make it impossible to enjoy, unless you’re a fan of the series.

3/10 This game may have moments of engagement, but not enough to justify putting yourself through it. There’s promise here that can be seen, but the game’s a mess of a let down that you should probably steer clear of.

2/10 There’s absolutely nothing of value here, nothing was executed with the slightest amount of effort or care. There’s no reason to play it. These dull slogs of games just aren’t worth your time.

1/10 Never play this game. Don’t do it. Don’t. This game has a chance of giving you PTSD. Don’t play it. Ever.
